A major downsizing from a five-bedroom family home to a three-bedroom house after 18 months in rental while the new property was renovated. Belongings were arriving from two locations and going to two others. My job was to orchestrate the whole thing and create a home that felt intentional, not compromised.
A cultured, well-travelled couple in their 70s - board members, art collectors and philanthropists, book and sport lovers - a life richly lived had accumulated a lot of physical memories. They were moving to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Wonderful people, with strong personalities and, as it turned out, quite different relationships with the idea of letting things go.
Four stages: planning the logistics across multiple locations; booking third parties and creating a detailed inventory of everything in storage; decluttering, packing and clearing the rental; then unpacking and organising the new home room by room as each was completed by the builders. An ongoing concierge role followed - maintenance, sales, donations, storage clearance.
Builders, architects and gardeners were still on site as we unpacked. The kitchen had to be organised in two phases because the cabinets weren't ready. And 257 artworks needed cataloguing - numbered, measured, photographed - before we could even begin designing the walls. Every room was a work in progress. You plan for that or you drown in it.
This was a move from a family home where children grew up and lifelong friendships were made. Every object carried a story. One partner was more sentimental, the other more pragmatic, a perfectly normal dynamic that needs careful navigation. My role was planner / mediator: making sure both felt heard, neither felt steamrolled, and the end result felt like theirs.
A home that worked - properly styled, art hung beautifully, storage organised intelligently, and an ongoing relationship to handle everything they didn't want to think about. From wine racks to utility rooms to selling antique furniture, it kept going well beyond move-in day. That continuity is often where the real value lives.
Downsizing is never just a logistics exercise - it's an edit of a life, and that deserves real care. It's important to always build in flexibility when renovations are involved. Builders don't run to your timeline. The ability to adapt the plan in real time, without losing the thread, is what makes or breaks a project like this.
